Overview
Vane is developed and operated by CodeArc.studio. Vane provides weather information and personalizes how conditions are described using optional check-ins and preferences.
Vane does not use advertising or cross-app tracking, does not sell personal information, and does not require a separate Vane account. Certain Vane data can sync through Apple CloudKit using the private iCloud database associated with your Apple Account.
Information Vane may use
Depending on the features you use, Vane may process the following types of information:
- Sense profile information, including your temperature preference, wind and humidity sensitivity, feels-like preference, and check-in frequency.
- Weather check-ins, including how conditions felt to you and the weather conditions associated with that moment, such as temperature, apparent temperature, humidity, wind, precipitation, UV, cloud cover, pressure, visibility, daylight status, time zone, and a location name when available.
- Saved places, including the place name, region, coordinates, time zone, ordering, and whether you mark a place as home.
- Current location, when you allow location access, so Vane can request weather for where you are and determine whether a check-in matches the place whose forecast you are viewing.
- App preferences stored on your device, such as appearance, units, selected weather location, notification preferences, and similar settings.
- Shared official-alert request information, only when you ask Vane to create a short link or load the full alert details, including the official Apple Weather alert identifier and language preference. Vane's server uses that identifier to retrieve the official alert from Apple WeatherKit and may store the resulting public alert content, such as the headline, severity, affected area, issuing source, timing, recommended actions, and agency message, for the shared alert page.
- Limited service and security metadata processed by Vane's hosting provider when the short-link service is used, such as IP address, IP-derived city and country, request path, user agent, status, and timing information.
- Support information you choose to send when you contact CodeArc.studio.
How information is used
Vane uses this information to provide forecasts and alerts, personalize weather descriptions through Sense, improve calibration from your check-ins, remember saved places and preferences, sync supported Vane data between your devices, power widgets and Live Activities, create an official-alert short link when you request one, protect and operate that service, and respond to support requests.
Location
If you grant location permission, Vane uses your device location to load weather for your current area. Coordinates are provided to Apple services as needed to request weather and location information.
Saved places include coordinates because Vane needs them to request the correct forecast and those saved-place coordinates can sync through your private iCloud database. Check-ins store the weather conditions, time zone, and a location name when available, but Vane does not store the precise latitude and longitude of each check-in as part of the check-in record.
You can control Vane's location access in your device settings. You can also use saved places when current-location access is unavailable, although some features may be limited.
iCloud and CloudKit sync
Vane uses Apple's CloudKit to sync your Sense profile, weather check-ins, and saved places through the private iCloud database associated with your Apple Account. This lets supported Vane apps use the same personal weather data across your signed-in Apple devices without creating a separate Vane account.
Apple describes the CloudKit private database as belonging to the iCloud user and being accessible only to that user by default. Its contents are not visible to CodeArc.studio through the CloudKit developer portal. Vane does not copy this synced data to a separate CodeArc-operated account server.
If iCloud is unavailable, restricted, or you are not signed in, Vane can keep changes locally on the device and resume syncing when iCloud becomes available.
Apple and third-party services
Vane relies on Apple services including WeatherKit / Apple Weather, Core Location, MapKit, CloudKit, notifications, widgets, and related platform features. Information processed by Apple through those services is subject to Apple's privacy practices and terms.
Vane currently uses Apple Weather for its forecast data and does not request a separate third-party air-quality model.
Sharing and disclosure
Vane does not sell your personal information and is not designed for advertising or cross-app tracking. Data may be processed by Apple when required to provide Apple platform services such as weather, maps, location, notifications, and iCloud sync. Information may also be disclosed when required by law, needed to protect users or the service, or as part of a business transfer such as a merger or acquisition.
When you load full official-alert details or choose to share an official alert, Vane sends the Apple Weather alert identifier and language preference to a CodeArc service hosted by Vercel. That service retrieves the alert directly from Apple WeatherKit instead of trusting alert text supplied by the app. Shared alert records are kept in private server storage, but the resulting short-link page is public to anyone who has or discovers its code. The request does not include your precise coordinates, Sense profile, weather check-ins, Vane account information, or a Vane device identifier. Vercel may process network and request metadata to deliver, secure, and monitor the service under its own privacy practices.
Data retention and deletion
Your Sense profile, check-ins, and saved places remain available to Vane so those features can work and, when iCloud is available, can remain synchronized across your devices. Vane does not maintain a separate CodeArc server-side copy of that private CloudKit data.
Vane automatically removes stored official-alert records after the configured retention period following the alert's listed expiry or event end. The current default is 30 days. Hosting request logs are retained according to the hosting plan and provider's operational policies. To request earlier removal of a shared alert link, send the short link or code to the contact address below.
In Vane Settings, you can delete your check-in history, reset what Sense has learned, or delete all Vane data. Deletions to synced profile, check-in, and saved-place data are made through the same iCloud-backed store and are intended to propagate to your Vane apps using that private database. Device permissions can be changed separately in system Settings.
Your choices
Check-ins, loading expanded official-alert details, and official-alert sharing are optional. You can skip them and continue using the basic weather experience. You can manage location and notification permissions through system Settings, manage Vane preferences in the app, remove saved places, delete individual check-ins, use the privacy reset controls in Vane Settings, and contact us with privacy questions, shared-link removal requests, or other requests.
Children's privacy
Vane is not intended to knowingly collect personal information from children in a way that requires parental consent under applicable law. If you believe a child has provided personal information improperly, contact us so we can review the request.
Changes to this policy
Vane will evolve as the app is developed. This policy may be updated to reflect new features, legal requirements, or changes in how information is handled. The updated date at the top of this page will change when the policy is revised.
